Happy 2013

It’s a new year full of new resolutions and one again I am faced with the one I always make…

 write more.

Here’s the deal, to be honest, I never know what to say on here and that slows down the process so I’m putting this out into the universe.

What do you want me to write?

Please, send me some topic ideas. Here are the rules: It has to be about fashion and it has to be appropriate.

Put your ideas in the comments.

Thanks for the help!

In the meantime, I promise to think for myself and get some of my own ideas together.

New topics soon!

Disney Bound

Have you all been to the Disney Bound tumblr?

It was created by Leslie Kay and its purpose is to help us grown up Disney fans have the ability to dress like our favorite characters and get away with it.

Ok, maybe that’s not the exact purpose but that’s how I see it. When I was a kid, my mom borrowed a snow white costume from a friend for me to wear for Halloween. I wore that costume a lot before I had to give it back. I’m pretty sure I tried to wear it every day. When you’re 24, you can’t get away with something like that unless you work in one of the Disney parks… or if you’re crazy.

Leslie Kay has changed that! She has put together outfits to represent all of the best parts of Disney:

(This is just a sample of what’s on the site)

Mickey and Friends

The Princesses

The Princes

The Heroes

The Heroines

The Villains

Any and All Characters

The Parks

The Rides

The Songs

Star Wars

Marvel

The Muppets

Studio Ghibli

Even Walt Disney

She also put together

Outfits on a budget

Athletic Outfits

Wedding ideas

Prom

Homecoming

Holiday Party

Back to School

There’s also

Harry Potter

Halloween rule breakers

There are over 700 pages of outfits to take inspiration from and I definitly had to condense it all down to fit it in and save myself some time. If you are a Disney fan, check out Disney bound! You won’t regret it. I myself am obsessed with it and can’t get enough.

In case you’re wondering, i got the pictures from http://disneybound.tumblr.com/ and if you click on any of them here, it will take you there.

12 things I can’t live without in my wardrobe

I’ve been away for a while. Things got kind of crazy. I don’t really want to talk about it. All you need to know is that I became too busy to write but don’t worry, I’m back and I don’t plan on letting that happen again.

So let’s just dive in.

It took some time to decide on what to write about on my first blog back. I felt like I owed you something so I am giving you a free peek into my life… ok, well not my life but my wardrobe… which might as well be my life.

Skinny Jeans

Being a plus sized girl, I was always really afraid to wear skinny jeans but then one day something just clicked. I bought my first pair of skinny jeans at some point in college and I never looked back.

Now don’t be mistaken, I’m not talking about jeggings. I’m talking about real skinny jeans.

I love the way they fit. I hate when I wear jeans and they stretch out and my knees get all baggy. My skinny jeans don’t do that.

I’m going to let you in on my secret: Torrid has the best skinny jeans for plus sized ladies that I have yet to find. They fit perfectly to show off my curves.

Check out their ad campaign for this year

Dresses

I love a good dress because it’s something simple and easy to throw on in any season for any activity or occasion.

I work in retail full-time and I have to wear all black. I have found that my favorite thing to wear on the job is dresses. A black dress is classic and easy to change-up with accessories. Plus it’s easy throw on and work in for eight hours… and it’s a comfortable way to stay cool in the summer.

I also love a casual jersey dress or sweater dress for normal everyday life; Shopping, hanging out, going to dinner, anything. I’m always more comfortable in a dress.

Leggings

For every dress there is a pair of leggings. What can I say, They make me feel more comfortable. I also wear them with a skirt and boots instead of tights because I run around a lot and I don’t always like the way tights feel.

I buy mine at target.

But you should remember this: LEGGINGS ARE NEVER PANTS

Scarves

I love scarves for several reasons.

First, they keep you warm. Duh.

Second, like I said before, I have to wear all black to my job so a scarf is a great way to add color.

Third, I’m allergic to metals so scarves are a great accessory for me.

Fourth, there are so many awesome patterns and colors to choose from. My sister just bought me a scarf covered with mustaches and I’m in love with it.

Tank Tops

Let me state the obvious, tank tops are great for layering.

There’s not much to be said about that. I layer pretty much all of my outfits so I wear a tank top every day.

My favorite are the tank tops from American Rag at Macy*s. They fit really well and hang beautifully and best of all, they come in a ton of colors and they have them in from small to 3x.

Ankle Socks

This seems like it’s obvious. Everyone wears socks.

I am making a point to say ankle socks. I like them because… Well I don’t really know why. They are cheap and I buy a lot of them and since I keep buying the same brand, I mix and match them every day. I’m cool like that.

I buy mine from target.

Long Sweaters

I’m sure this isn’t something that I can’t live without but it’s definitely something I love. I have a great black one that I found on a clearance rack. It’s my go to for work on most days.

I also have one that’s really comfortable that I’ve worn about 20 times since I got it two months ago. It’s an awesome way to stay comfy when I’m going out.

Tee Shirts

Much like the tank tops and the socks, I don’t have a lot to say about this, just that its something that I couldn’t live without.

On my off days from work, you’ll usually find me in a tee-shirt. My favorite ones are the solid colored ones (because they are easy to layer and look great with everything) or the really soft ones.

A great hoodie

Hoodies are tough because they can be difficult to keep in good condition and they are hard to keep stylish.

As far as condition goes, my suggestion is wash in cold and hang it to dry. It will keep the fleece from getting matted.

With style, I’ll tell you what I tell all of my customers. It doesn’t really matter what you are wearing or what other people think as long as you are happy and confident in it. That’s all that matters.

I got my favorite hoodie from the men’s half of Ralph Lauren Denim and Supply. Its big and soft but still flattering (somehow because it’s about a size and a half too big) and it has a simple print so it’s not too crazy.

***

Now let’s talk about shoes

Boots

In the winter, I can’t get enough of my boots. I don’t like having cold ankles. They make me sad.

So I turn to my boots. For my birthday I splurged on a gorgeous pair of brown leather riding boots. I wear them as much as possible.

I also love a great pair of fur-lined boots… those are usually my comfy choice.

Ballet flats

Since boots season is (really only supposed to be) fall and winter, I need something for the rest of the year. Much like scarves, Ballet flats are my way of adding color, patterns, and general pizzazz to my boring everyday black outfits.

Converse

There is nothing in this world like a pair of dirty, beat up converse sneakers. I look forward to the day that I can have a pair in every color. For now, I try to choose a color that will brighten up my wardrobe and still stay neutral enough to pair with everything I own.

I have a purple pair.

***

So that’s my style in a nutshell. When its written down like this, it seems kind of boring but when you put it together, I promise it’s not.

Okay, I don’t really promise.

You be the judge. Let me know if it’s totally boring. Or don’t. You should probably remember what thumper’s mama told him:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wui-PNqJrxs

I’m really glad to be back. I hope that I can keep up with it better this time!

So I’ve been thinking a lot about jeans…

I recently re-did my entire jeans department in the store that I work in.

And by re-done I mean I refolded every pair of jeans. That means that I saw every style of jeans we carry and let me tell you… I was disappointed.

Can someone explain to me the… epidemic of embellished jeans?

It’s not just for women anymore. Men’s jeans are becoming so over styled and I am calling for a stop to it.

As I was going through the department, I was disappointed in men’s fashion.

I recently took a poll… of my friends…on facebook…BUT a poll nonetheless. They all said that basic jeans are the way to go. A lot of the WOMEN said that they wear the embellished jeans to go out sometimes and one guy asked what embellished jeans are.

That’s how men should be! They shouldn’t know what embellished jeans are!

Here’s more proof:

In Mindy Kaling’s new book, “Is everyone hanging out without me?”

she writes a list of things guys need to be hot. Here is a quote from that book and the number 3 item on her list:

“Own several pairs of dark-wash straight-leg jeans:
Don’t get bootcut, don’t get skinny-just a nice pair of Levi’s without any embellishments on the pockets. No embellishments anywhere. At all. Nothing. Oh my god.”

Number 3!

I don’t know if you really need any more proof.

Men, please, stop buying embellished jeans. They are not as attractive as you think they are.

I also hate the word bling. It has nothing to do with this but I just wanted to share that.

2012 Golden Globes

You all know how much I love Award season and this year I’m going to be honest, all I care about is the winners and the fashion.

You know I’m not here to talk about the winners… even though I really really want the help to win EVERYTHING they are nominated for. Seriously, have you seen this movie? Have you read the book? It’s an amazing story.

This year I am trying something new. I am attempting to post this the night of because I’ve noticed that that is what the best bloggers do. I want to be one of the best bloggers so let’s see if I will be successful at this.

There is something else that I’m trying this year; I picked out some of my favorite styles and dresses and we are going to play a little game called who did it better.

Here we go… this is going to be fun.

Black Dresses

Debra Messing in Monique Lhullier

Mila Kunis in Dior

I like both of these dresses but I prefer Debra Messing’s. The gown fit her really well and was classic and a perfect choice.

Nude Dresses

I put three in the category because this was a popular style on the red carpet.

Kate Beckinsale in Cavalli

Sarah Hyland in Dolce and Gabana

Julie Bowen in Reem Acra

I pick Julie Bowen. I love this gown. It’s very vintage. There’s not much else to say about it.

Cut-outs

Dianna Agron in Giles

Michelle Williams in Jason Woo

This was a really tough choice but I’m going to go with Diana Agron. This dress is really funky and cool and I have to say that there is something about it that I love.

Blue

Berenice Bejo in Gucci Premiere

Jane Lynch in David Meister

I think the obvious choice is Berenice Bejo. That dress is amazing. To be honest, Jane Lynch wasn’t really fair competition.

Feathers

 Evan Rachel Wood in Gucci

Lea Michelle in Marchesa

I had trouble making a choice here so I asked Angela and she picked Evan Rachel Wood. She liked the contrast of her skin tone and the neckline.

High Neck

Kate Winslet in Jenny Packham

Jessica Chastain in Givenchy

I love Jessica Chastain but I’m going with Kate Winslet on this one. I love it. It fit her curves perfectly.

Lace

 Jessica Biel

Jessica Alba in Gucci

I choose Jessica Alba. I love this dress. The color, the sash, the cut… I love it all.

Teal-y Blue

I say that because I’m not totally sure what color these dresses are.

Sophia Vergara in Vera Wang

Frieda Pinto in Prada

Both dresses are gorgeous and very fitting for the respective actresses but it was Frieda Pinto’s that wowed me more.

So now we are down to the two dresses that made me want to write this blog in this style.

Plus Sized

Ok so normally I wouldn’t group women together just because of their size but I just have to this time. I want to talk about this:

Octavia Spencer in Tadashi Shoji

Melissa McCarthy in Badgley Mischka

Octavia Spencer is a good representation of how plus sized women should dress on the red carpet. Melissa McCarthy’s shapeless gown makes me sad. She could have worn something so incredible and gorgeous but she didn’t and that bugs me… especially because I love her so much.

Ok. So what did you think? Did you like it this way?

Don’t worry, I won’t leave you hanging. Here are my five favorites

Reese Witherspoon in Zac Posen

She looks like a mermaid in this gown. Absolutely gorgeous.

Sarah Michelle Geller in Monique Lhuillier

I hated this dress at first but then I stared at it for a while and now I love it.

Emma Stone in Lanvin

This dress is perfect for Emma Stone. It’s quirky, it’s fun, and it’s gorgeous

Ariel Winter in Dolce and Gabana

I love this dress. It was perfect for a fourteen year old girl.

Charlize Theron in Dior Couture

I love this Grecian style.

I decided to leave out the bad dresses because I dont feel like being negative today.

I hope you enjoyed the opinions I did post.

HAPPY AWARDS SEASON!

Menswear for Women

I have to start this by apologizing for my absence lately. It has been way too long. I got a little promotion over the summer and my whole life has surrounded around working.

BUT I made a new year’s resolution to write more and I am going to try to post once a week.

How about I make it up to you with a blog themed for my new job; let’s talk about menswear for women.

You don’t have to get crazy. I’m not talking about doing drag;

I’m just talking about getting a little inspiration from the fellas.

We are going look at two ways to go about this trend: The first is looking at menswear inspired pieces and the other way is looking at some actual menswear that you can transfer into your wardrobe.

Inspired

Let’s start with something obvious and basic menswear inspired pieces:

Boyfriend Jacket

This particular piece has been around for a couple of years now and it’s definitely one of my favorites because you can do a lot of different things with it. I have three favorite looks with the boyfriend jacket.

The first is the sexy look.

Try pairing the jacket with a short shift dress and a pair of heels.

The second is the cute look.

Try pairing the jacket with a sun dress and flats.

The third is the casual look.

Try the jacket with jeans and a tank top. I like this look with sneakers or flats.

Tweed

I know what you’re thinking; that’s a fabric and men don’t own a fabric and you are right but it’s about what the tweed represents: Suits and tailoring and when I think suits and tailoring I think of men… mainly Don Draper and Barney Stinson.

With tweed you can go two different ways; you can do full on Chanel with the full suit.

Or you can do accents; tweed shoes, tweed bag, or you could go with my favorite: tweed headband.

Loafers

I won’t lie to you because I never do; I have always thought that loafers were boring. They remind me of Danny Tanner.

However, the thing that they’ve done with loafers changes everything. Now you can get them flat or with heels and in different colors. You can pair them with jeans as casual flats or with dress pants or a suit for a great wear to work look.

Sunglasses

There are some really great unisex styles for sunglasses. My two favorites are aviators and the classic raybans. You can steal them from any man in your life OR you can go and get them for yourself.

Borrowed

Here’s a list of items that you can steal from the closet of any of the men in your life.

Belted flannel shirts

Flannel shirts are popular right now and they aren’t hard to find for people of all ages but I have always believed that it is pointless to spend money if you don’t have to so here is what you do:

  1. Steal a flannel shirt from your boyfriend or husband or dad or brother or friend. Make sure it fits.
  2. Put it on with skinny jeans and a belt. You can move the belt up or down to give your body the shape you want. (I gave two examples in the pictures)
  3. Add really any shoes you want.
  4. Done! Wow, that was easy!

Tees

Who hasn’t stolen a tee-shirt from a guy before? Seriously.

I mean, tee shirts are generally unisex and I guess that’s the point really.

Here are my tips when choosing a men’s tee shirt: go for something fitted and avoid the crude shirts.

Sweaters

Men tend to have the basic pieces that women don’t always have. For example, I was having a very difficult time finding a sweater vest, but then I found some in the men’s department.

They may not all be the best for women, they definitely aren’t cut the same as women’s sweaters, but they will give you that preppy look that you want.

Dress Shirts

And now to top it off, a short video on some fun things you can do with a men’s dress shirt. I found this video here: http://blogs.babble.com/the-new-home-ec/2011/08/24/diy-fashion-using-a-mens-dress-shirt/

I hope that made up for the long absence. I will be back next week!

4 things I’m always willing to splurge on (and 4 things I prefer to splurge on)

We all know that the economy is bad but we also know that there are things that we are always willing to splurge on. We’ve tried the generic but it just doesn’t measure up. This has happened to everyone… and if it hasn’t happened to you than you must not be real.

So here it is: My list (in no particular order) of the five things I am always willing to splurge on (because I know you are dying to know.):

Face wash

A few months ago, I was looking to save money so I decided to switch to generic face wash. I checked the ingredients, they were all the same. So I went for it.

THAT WAS THE WORST MISTAKE I COULD HAVE MADE!

You see, the ingredients were the same but the consistency was different. That threw everything off. When I wash my face with the name brand face wash, it just feels different. I can feel it cleaning my skin and when I step into the fresh air, my face just feels cleaner.

What I’m splurging on: Neutrogena Deep Clean Cream Cleanser

Bras

Did you know that most women don’t actually know their bra size?

That doesn’t really have much to do with this…I just felt like telling you.

Here’s what is relevant:

The bra is the most important part of a woman’s wardrobe. That’s why I’m always willing to splurge on a good bra. When you buy a cheap bra, you can’t expect much from it. This is one of those things where you get what you pay for. A good bra will give you support all day and keep them up where they are supposed to be.

What I’m splurging on: Cacique Bras by Lane Bryant. They have great bras if you are plus sized or on the bustier side.

Underwear

I don’t have much to say about underwear except for the fact that you should definitely not buy the cheap kind. They will stretch out and wear out and ride up.

This is another important part of your wardrobe so why not indulge
a little and be comfortable all day.

What I’m splurging on: Cacique panties from Lane Bryant.

Jeans

Much like cheap underwear, cheap jeans have a tendency to wear out and stretch out really quickly. That’s why I think it’s really important to spend a little more. I would rather spend $60 on a pair of jeans and have them last 6+ months then buy a pair for $20 and have them only last about 2 or 3.

What I’m splurging on: I get my jeans from Lane Bryant. What can I say, they have good merchandise.

Wasn’t that interesting!? Now, just for fun, I wrote a list of the four things I PREFER to splurge on:

Nail Polish

Of course I buy cheap nail polish. Every girl does. You want a color change and you have no money so you go for the bottle at the drug store that $1-$2. It works. It goes on fine but it chips in a couple of days.

That’s fine if you want to change your color often but I don’t like to do that.

What I prefer to splurge on: I really like Sally Hansen, Essie, Avon, and O.P.I

Mascara

Once upon a time, I bought really cheap mascara. About two weeks after I started using it, it got clumpy and developed an odor.

Since then I have purchased cheap mascara again but it’s definitely not a preference.

What I prefer to splurge on: Cover Girl Lash Blast Mascara

Toothpaste

I’m sure that this seems like such an odd thing to include but it’s a big deal to me. I feel like certain toothpastes clean better than others.

What I prefer to splurge on: Aquafresh Extreme Clean Toothpaste

Shampoo and Conditioner

My biggest issue with my hair is that it is very fine and it gets dirty very quickly. I wash my hair almost every day (and yes I know that you are not supposed to do that but I do it anyway and it works for me so I don’t need a thousand lectures on the subject.)

I have found that while some shampoos and conditioners clean my hair well, others leave behind residue.

What I prefer to splurge on: Herbal Essences Color Me Happy Shampoo and Conditioner.

So there it is.

Here’s what I want to add; I’m sure that a lot of you are looking at this list and thinking that I’m not really splurging but here is my justification: In this economy and with my salary, these are most definitely splurges for me.

I hope these lists will make your shopping decisions easier.
